Some of you may recall this photo from six years ago.
Besides noting how young our two girls look, I'm gobsmacked at the amount of luggage I am looking at in this photo and that at the time I thought we were travelling light for a move of one year. So, I'm just going to get this over with right away: Barry, you were right, this was anything but travelling light! This was an insane amount of luggage to manoeuvre through grumpy airport security, into taxis more geared to business travellers and their carry-ons, and on and off quick stopping, crowded, cramped French trains. We definitely couldn't have done it without my parents who accompanied us on that journey. I know for a fact that my parents will never forget these 12 bags.
As to what exactly I was thinking in the summer of 2010 (Guess what? One can purchase clothes, spices, cleaning supplies and recipes in France.), I don't even know. But, I can no longer feign ignorance. I am older and wiser. This is what we've hit the road with this summer:
Each of us has a backpack they can manage on their backs and one carry-on. Only one large suitcase among the lot. I am not saying this is "light"; I've learnt that lesson. I realize it's still enough luggage for 2 out of 3 taxi drivers to look the other way. But "lighter", and our girls are bigger and stronger.
Allons-y!
